percussionist and educator,
Michael has completed
studies in a variety of
musical traditions, and has
studied extensively with
Master Drummer Mamady
Keita. Michael is the music
director of the MALIDOMA!
World Music & Dance
ensemble, and the
drumming instructor at
Havermale High School.
And he has created and
directed many events and
performance groups
around traditional music
and dance, including Prima
Noche, the World Music
Summit Concert Series, and
the MALIDOMA! World
Drum & Dance Camp.
Michael offers both group
and private instruction year
round at his studio in
Spokane, as well as
facilitating a variety of
school presentations,
residencies and community
workshops.
Our drum classes will inspire you with the grooves of traditional drumming. And our dance classes will bring your body alive with the passionate movements of American Tribal Style Bellydance.

This weekly class is perfect for the novice who is interested in learning to
drum well, from the beginning, as well as experienced drummers who are
new to Traditional West African music and are seeking to expand their
repertoire. We will explore this powerful style, playing traditional rhythms on
African drums. The history and traditional usage of each rhythm presented is
also covered, and is an integral part of our studies.

West African Drumming - LEVEL TWO
Thursday, 7:30 - 8:30PM, May 22nd - July 10th
Successful completion of Level One West African Class required
This eight week class continues the course of study begun in the Level One
classes, and proceeds with the introduction of more sophisticated drumming
material, such as involved breaks, songs, and beginning solo and
improvisation techniques.

West African Drumming - LEVEL THREE
Wednesday, 7:30 - 8:30PM, May 21st - July 9th
Prior approval from Professor required
The Level Three class continues the course of study begun in the previous
two levels, and introduces students to dunun playing, advanced soloing
techniques, and sophisticated choreographies.

Afro-Cuban Drumming - OPEN LEVEL
Saturday, 12:00 - 1:00PM, May 24th - July 12th
Beginners Welcome - No prior experience necessary
In this class we study the many traditional rhythms for the Conga drums. We
play individual patterns as well as ensemble pieces. Play the Conga Drum,
this is a really fun class, and the rhythms are mellow and groovy! A great
choice for percussionists working in primarily acoustic settings.

style. Cindy is the
director of MALIDOMA!

the Middle East, India,
North Africa and Spain to
create a beautiful,
elegant and fun dance
form.

In this class we will explore the rich legacy of drumming styles and
techniques used by percussionists in the Middle-East. This is a really fun
class, and the rhythms are mellow and trance-like. Experience the drums of
the Middle-East and learn to play ancient rhythms!
